About

The Barr Trail Mountain Race began in 2000 with the intent of attracting top mountain-running athletes to race on Pikes Peak – the fourteener in Colorado Springs’ backdrop. The race was founded by skyrunning legend, Matt Carpenter together with Nancy Hobbs, founder and director of the American Trail Running Association (ATRA), ISF member. The race is capped at 400 runners due to environmental reasons, and it typically boasts more than 300 participants.

It is important to the race committee to not just put on a running event, but to stage a competitive race. From comp entries to prize money, the Barr Trail Mountain Race (BTMR) is doing what it takes to bring in the top competition. Just as important to the committee is what the BTMR accomplishes when it comes to giving back to the community and area in which we live and play! 100% of the profit of entry fees (after race fees/pending sponsorship/permitting/etc) are donated to 501(c)(3) nonprofit and/or volunteer organizations and/or community projects with additional money going to the High School Aid Station Challenge. In all, the BTMR has given back over $260,000 in donations with over $100,000 going to area high school running programs!

It can not be overemphasized that this would not be possible without our awesome sponsors.

Race Organization

The Barr Trail Mountain Race is put on in partnership with Pikes Peak Marathon, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization with public charity status. In 2020, we became the 2nd leg in the Garden to Peak Challenge (formerly the Triple Crown), which includes the Garden 10 Mile and the Pikes Peak Ascent or Marathon. We are an equal opportunity service provider and a permittee of the Pike National Forest.

Financial Information

The BTMR supports local non-profit entities that help maintain our wonderful trails and open spaces, as well as local High Schools (who run our aid stations for you!). With your registration, you have the option to help donate more to these entities at checkout. Anything extra you give is much appreciated, and is divided between these entities in addition to a portion of the race profits.

We Value Your Input

Please feel free to contact us with your comments, questions and concerns. Just like the runner who is always trying to improve, we are always trying to make the BTMR the best race it can be so we take comments and suggestions very seriously.
